NATIONAL URBAN FORUM

Awaiting the Twelfth  Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) to be held in Cairo, Egypt, in November 2024 the Agency for Spatial and Urban Planning of the Republic of Serbia, the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia, the City of Niš, the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities – the Association of Towns and Municipalities in Serbia are organizing altogether the National Urban Forum which will be held in April 2024 in Niš, in partnership with the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Serbia, the United Nations Human Settlements Program – UN-Habitat and the World Bank, and with the support of the Science Technology Park Niš and the Swiss Economic Cooperation and Development Division (SECO). The National Urban Forum which, among other things, is a means of preparation of national actors for participating in the World Urban Forum will gather a large number of participants from the public and private sector, the academic community, scientific research institutions, civil society, the economy, international institutions, as well as guests from abroad. The theme of the forum is “Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals and Monitoring of Urban Development in Serbia”.

The aim of the forum is to view key topics and activities in the field of urban development through the lens of multi-level urban development governance with a special emphasis on the local level. A special focus within the plenary session of the forum will be on the monitoring and implementation of sustainable development goals in local self-government units, as well as the connection with their monitoring and implementation at the state and global level. Special aspects of urban development will be discussed through parallel sessions: Green Agenda and urban development, urban development governance and digitisation, architecture, urban culture and social aspects of urban development. Special attention will be paid to the institutionalisation of urban development monitoring at the local level, the role of youth in urban development and the importance of exchanging experiences in the field of urban development at the level of Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus macro-region and Central Asia.

Conceived in this way, the National Urban Forum contributes to establishing a wider dialogue with the aim of better formulating and implementation of public policies in the field of urban development, and thus the participants gain a comprehensive insight and the opportunity to contribute to better implementation, monitoring and evaluation of urban development policy on multiple levels. The National Urban Forum aims at contributing to greater sustainability, inclusiveness, resilience and safety of urban settlements, and all with the purpose of better quality of local activities for sustainable cities and communities, which is the topic of the Twelfth Session of the World Urban Forum.
